Apple Vision Pro: The future of creative storytelling is here.

As a society, we have witnessed the evolution of augmented reality (AR) experiences over the past 15 years. Disney embarked on this journey in 2011, introducing AR experiences that brought beloved characters to life in the physical world. Platforms like Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook have also integrated AR filters into our daily lives. However, the recent announcement of Apple Vision Pro marks a significant leap forward for the entertainment and creative community. This groundbreaking technology goes beyond mere marketing activations, promising unparalleled experiences that blend digital content seamlessly with the real world. Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed his enthusiasm, stating “blending digital content with the real world can unlock experiences like nothing we’ve ever seen.”

While this statement could apply to any AR experience that’s been created and shared with the world since the early days, the experiences this device will unlock will be profoundly incredible and uniquely magical. The culmination of over 5,000 patented technologies led to this new unlimited canvas that will enable creative storytellers to paint their stories in immersive ways never dreamed of before.  And I’m looking forward to being part of the creative community that develops unbelievably magical experiences for the world to experience and immersive themselves in.

Here are 5 ways this incredible technology will change the course of innovative creative storytelling:

  1. Supercharging Creative Development: Filmmaking technology has been advancing rapidly, enhancing the way storytellers capture and present their narratives. Industrial Light & Magic's revolutionary Stagecraft technology has already revolutionized virtual set creation on soundstages. Similarly, Apple Vision Pro will democratize these capabilities, reducing production costs for independent and lower-budget films. Additionally, Vision Pro facilitates real-time collaboration among filmmakers, enabling seamless sharing of footage with fellow creatives.

  2. Volumetric Video Capture: With Apple Vision Pro's 3D camera, users can capture and share immersive 3D videos with spatial audio. The technology's ability to deliver high-quality 180-degree 3D 8K recordings with Spatial Audio opens up new possibilities. For instance, fans can enjoy live music concerts from anywhere in the world, manipulating camera angles and views like never before. Imagine having your favorite band perform right in your family room, creating an intimate and unforgettable experience.

  3. Interactive Storytelling: Apple Vision Pro empowers filmmakers and developers to create interactive stories, granting viewers agency over the direction and outcome of narratives. Through deep integration with Unity, varying degrees of immersive experiences can be crafted. Picture yourself pausing a cinematic movie to explore a scene interactively, stepping into the shoes of a character and navigating the environment. Alternatively, viewers can experience personalized stories driven by AI, offering infinite endings. This level of interaction takes storytelling to new heights, surpassing previous experiments in choose-your-own-adventure content.

  4. Creator-Imagined Environments: Apple Vision Pro ignites the creative potential for immersive environments. Just as Apple showcased the possibilities of Immersive Worlds, creative minds worldwide will craft unimaginably rich environments where people can gather, converse, study, and more. The possibilities for virtual social interactions and collaborative experiences are truly boundless.

  5. Extending Cinematic Experience to Your Space: AR has the potential to seamlessly merge digital content with your physical environment, redefining the boundaries of your home cinematic experience. An example of this is the collaboration between The Walt Disney Studios studioLAB and Disney+. Their project "Remembering" introduced an original short film accompanied by an AR companion iOS app experience that enhanced the storytelling. Academy Award winner Brie Larson and Emmy Winning director Elijah Allan-Blitz created an original short film and an accompanying AR experience that enhances movie storytelling.  The “Remembering” AR component was designed to bring “The World of Imagination” alive to viewers by instructing the viewer to hold their iPhone up to their TV at a critical moment in the short film.  Immediately the waterfall scene on the TV begins to flow into your room and a new undiscovered world is unlocked and brought to life right before your eyes. By incorporating Apple Vision Pro, such experiences can transcend to a whole new level of interactivity and immersion, blurring the lines between the screen and your surroundings.

Apple Vision Pro represents a paradigm shift in AR technology, ushering in a new era of creative storytelling. Its impact will be felt across various domains, from filmmaking to interactive narratives and immersive environments. As part of the tech and creative community, we eagerly anticipate the boundless magic and innovation this groundbreaking technology will unlock for the world to experience and immerse themselves in.
